Prepare before you travel
Keep a phone number that receives verification SMS, your passport and a bank card you can authenticate. Enter sensitive details only in the official app.
Save your hotel's Chinese name and address, booking confirmations and useful phrases on your phone for offline access.
Prepare a second payment method and some RMB cash. Install while your usual app store and internet connection are available.

Pay in shops
Alipay / 支付宝
A payment option for merchants in mainland China; start with one wallet rather than setting up every app.
For mainland-China merchant payments with eligible overseas cards. Card issuer, merchant and account checks still apply.
iPhone / iOS
Use Alipay's verified App Store listing; check the publisher and your store region.
Open Alipay's official Google Play listing with a supported store region and network; prepare before arrival. If Play is unavailable, check the official download page under Sources or prepare another payment method.
Install Alipay, select your country code and register with a phone number that receives the verification SMS.
Use the bank-card section to add your own eligible card. Complete issuer authentication and identity checks if requested.
At a merchant, use Scan for their payment QR or show your payment code when asked. Confirm merchant, amount and any fee before paying.
Check before relying on it
Linking a card does not guarantee every payment. Personal transfers, red packets and some services are different from merchant purchases. Fees, promotions and limits change; read the confirmation screen.
If it fails
Try another eligible card or wallet, ask whether the merchant accepts a physical card, or use RMB cash. Contact your card issuer if authentication fails.
Register WeChat with a reachable phone number and follow its account-security checks. Registration may require additional verification.
Find Pay and Services / Wallet, add your eligible card and complete the requested identity and issuer checks.
Use Scan or your payment code at a merchant. Check the recipient, amount, fee and any current promotion before confirming.
Check before relying on it
An overseas card is not a promise of transfers or red packets. Card eligibility, fees and temporary fee waivers have conditions; do not assume a waiver applies to you.
If it fails
If registration or linking is blocked, use Alipay or another accepted payment method and cash. Ask the hotel for an alternative contact channel.
Install the official app and check the available interface language. Permit location access when you want directions, or search manually.
Paste the Chinese name from the place card or your hotel confirmation; check the city, branch and street address.
Choose walking or transit and inspect the route. In Chongqing, confirm the entrance and road level before following a pin.
Check before relying on it
A map pin does not establish the entrance, floor, lift access or a step-free path. English support is not a guarantee that every local service is translated.
If it fails
Show the saved Chinese name and address to staff. Use station signage and ask which entrance or road level to use; keep an offline screenshot.
Open the mainland-China service, choose an available language and register with a number that can receive SMS. Set up an accepted payment method.
Enter the destination's Chinese name and exact branch. Set the pickup at the correct road level and confirm the fare shown.
Match the plate and vehicle before boarding. Use in-app messages or translation for pickup instructions and review the trip before confirming payment.
Check before relying on it
The international brand covers different markets. Standalone-app access, mini-program functions, cards and language options can differ. Airport pickups use designated areas.
If it fails
Use an official taxi rank, ask your hotel to arrange a licensed taxi, or take the metro. Show the driver the saved Chinese address.
Open 12306's official site or app and choose the available English interface. Register and follow contact-verification instructions.
Add the passenger using the passport name and document number exactly. Follow the identity-verification status before attempting a booking.
Check the station's full name, date, train, seat, fare and change/refund conditions. Save the order and bring the original passport for travel.
Check before relying on it
An unverified passenger may be unable to book online. Chongqing North, West and Shapingba are different stations. A booking request is not an issued ticket.
If it fails
Use the official English website or a staffed station counter with your passport. A booking platform may offer help, but check its fees and ticket-issuance status.
Choose your language, market and currency, then sign in or follow the booking flow on the official app or website.
Compare the actual property and room, cancellation terms, taxes, payment timing and passport check-in information. Ask the property directly about uncertain requirements.
Enter guest names as required, check the final price and confirm only when ready. Save the confirmation, Chinese address and property contact details offline.
Check before relying on it
A platform listing does not guarantee a particular hotel's passport check-in process or language support. App deals and refunds depend on the selected rate; verify before purchase.
If it fails
Use the official website or book directly with the property. If a ticket or room is still pending, contact the platform and property before making a duplicate purchase.
Translate short text and keep a prepared Chinese phrase or address ready to show.
Microsoft Translator has official iOS and Android downloads. Features, language packs and network access vary by device.
iPhone / iOS
Open the App Store listing linked by Microsoft's official app page. Test the features and network, and save Chinese phrases separately for offline use.
Open the Google Play listing linked by Microsoft's official app page; it needs a supported network and store region. Offered language packs can provide offline text translation; speech requires a network.
Install before travel and choose your language and Chinese. Check microphone or camera permissions only for features you intend to use.
On Android, download the offered source and target language packs and test offline text. On iPhone, save Chinese phrases separately. Speech translation requires a network.
Type or speak a short sentence, then show the Chinese result. Keep hotel names, addresses and essential phrases saved separately.
Check before relying on it
Machine translation can misread menus, allergies, names and amounts. Offline features and packs vary; critical instructions need a person's confirmation.
If it fails
Show your saved Chinese text, use your phone's available translation tools, or ask staff for help. Keep sensitive passport and card details out of translation inputs.
