To use 12306 with a foreign passport for a Chongqing rail journey in 2026, create an accurate passenger record, complete the requested verification and check the issued order before travelling. China Railway’s English registration form accepts foreign passports. The document used for booking must remain consistent with the one you present for the journey.
Treat account registration, identity verification, ticket purchase and station entry as separate tasks. Completing the first does not prove that the others have succeeded. Begin while you still have time to correct an error, rather than making your first attempt while a train is about to depart.
The official starting point is the 12306 English registration page. Check the domain carefully when following a search result. A service with “12306” somewhere in its name is not necessarily China Railway. This guide covers the official workflow and the checks that matter, without pretending that every current screen or overseas payment combination has been tested.
Build a passenger record from the travel document
The public English registration form, read on 1 October 2026, asks for nationality, name, passport number, expiry date, birth date and other account information. It provides a link to its passport-information rules. Use those live instructions for spelling and formatting rather than copying a name template from an old travel post.
Have the passport information page in front of you. Check every digit, the order of names and the document’s expiry. Avoid autofill if it inserts a shortened name or another person’s information. An account display name, a nickname and the passenger identity on a ticket are not interchangeable concepts.
If your name has several parts, punctuation or characters the form will not accept, stop at the field’s own guidance. Do not improvise by removing names until the form submits. An older Beijing government English guide includes historical formatting instructions, but those should not override the current official form.
Keep the email address and contact details usable throughout the trip. If booking for companions, check their passenger records against their own passports. A correctly registered buyer does not remove the need for accurate information for each person who will board.

Finish verification before relying on an account
The travel section of MOFCOM’s 2025 guide describes online identity checking, an option to submit a passport information-page image for manual checking, and verification at a railway ticket office with the valid passport. These are supported routes for resolving identity checks; they do not establish an instant approval time for every traveler.
Read the status actually displayed after submission. An upload acknowledgement is different from a completed identity result. Save any non-sensitive reference number or error text, then use it when requesting help. Do not create repeated accounts or alternate spellings merely because a status has not changed immediately.
If the online route remains unresolved, take the original passport to a railway ticket office and explain that you need help with the 12306 identity record. Ask staff whether the record is verified and whether an existing order is linked correctly. If a passport has been renewed since registration or booking, raise that document change before travel rather than assuming the older number will be accepted.
Keep document images within the official verification channel. Do not post your passport page in a public forum or send it to someone who offers to “fix” the account in a comment. When asking a friend to translate an error, conceal information they do not need to see. The useful question is the meaning of the status, not public access to your identity document.
Search the exact station pair and read the result
China Railway’s transport rules effective from 1 June 2026 describe the journey details recorded on a ticket, including stations, train, travel date, departure time and seat information. Use that list as a practical comparison when selecting a service. A city search can offer stations that require very different local transfers.
For Chongqing, retain the complete station name in the result. Chongqing North, 重庆北, Chongqing West, 重庆西, and Chongqing East, 重庆东, are distinct destinations for your taxi or metro journey. Do not choose solely by the shortest train duration while ignoring how you will reach the departure station or leave the arrival station.
Select the date in China’s local travel context, especially if planning from another time zone or dealing with an overnight journey. Check whether the result is direct or involves a connection. If a connection uses different stations within a city, consider the actual transfer before committing. An itinerary that can be displayed is not automatically comfortable for your luggage, language confidence or mobility needs.
Read the seat class and availability shown for that service. If the system has not issued a confirmed ticket, do not treat a saved preference, pending order or request as permission to board. Our Chongqing railway-station guide helps with the local-station decision, while the current 12306 result supplies the actual train choices.

Verify payment and ticket issue as separate outcomes
MOFCOM’s 2025 travel guidance describes online and station-counter purchasing, with payment options dependent on the channel. It is not a promise that any particular overseas card will work in your current session. Read the accepted options and final total on the official payment screen before proceeding.
After payment, return to the order record. Check that the journey is issued and that the passenger, train, date, station pair and seat class match what you intended. Save the order information somewhere accessible during travel, but keep the document number and any account details private. A payment alert alone is not enough to tell station staff which train you booked.
If the payment page stalls, check the order status before trying another purchase. You want to establish whether the first transaction completed, remained pending or failed. Repeating a purchase without checking can create duplicate charges or multiple orders to untangle. If the result is unclear, contact official support or ask at a ticket office with the transaction reference.
For a shared itinerary, verify that everyone has a confirmed place on the intended service. Do not assume that companion orders made separately will automatically produce adjacent seats. If seating together is important, inspect the actual result and ask what options are available before changing anything.
Our foreign-visitor payment guide covers general preparation, but the railway’s current order record is the deciding evidence for this purchase.
Correct a mistake promptly, with the conditions visible
A Beijing municipal notice dated 19 January 2026 describes a useful misbooking-refund provision: eligible new official-channel tickets paid electronically or with points for travel from 2 February can be refunded without a fee within 30 minutes of payment, provided departure is at least 4 hours away. It is limited to one order per purchaser per calendar day and excludes changed, reservation and waitlisted purchases, among other categories.
That provision is a reason to inspect your order immediately. It is not a general grace period for every ticket, sales channel or later change of plans. Check whether the option applies to the order you actually hold, and read the refund result before assuming the ticket has been cancelled.
For an ordinary change, look for the order’s change function, sometimes translated as “endorsement.” Compare the replacement journey and displayed costs before confirming. A change request needs an available eligible service; it does not create a seat on a full train. If the site cannot handle your situation, ask the ticket office rather than editing the passenger identity to force a different result.
The current railway rules distinguish processing channels and circumstances, including cash purchases. Keep the original payment method and any existing documentation available. Avoid relying on a simplified social-media refund chart when the official transaction screen can show the conditions for your particular order.

Keep the original passport ready at the station
The 12306 English FAQ, checked on 1 October 2026, connects the ticket with the identity document used for purchase and says an itinerary printout is not a boarding document. Bring the original passport used in the booking. An order screenshot is helpful for explaining the journey, but it does not substitute for that document.
At the station, find the departure entrance and follow the current security and ticket-check process. If an automatic reader does not handle your passport, ask staff which channel to use. Do not repeatedly try a barrier while a document or passenger-record issue remains unresolved. Keep the order available so staff can identify the service quickly.
Allow time for assistance, particularly for the first rail journey after verification or a document correction. The 2026 railway rules say stations announce how far ahead of departure boarding checks stop. There is no universal gate-closing minute established here. Arriving before the printed departure time is therefore not the same as arriving before boarding closes.
Check the train number on the station display and find the indicated waiting area. Keep your passport accessible through boarding and arrival checks. If a train is delayed or a gate changes, follow the station’s current announcement. Do not assume that the timing of an older saved screenshot still applies.
Resolve remaining uncertainty before the travel day
The 12306 English FAQ read in October 2026 brings together booking, change and refund guidance, but it also retains some older text alongside updates. For a consequential decision, use the current order conditions and ask railway staff when an older explanation conflicts with what the system shows. This guide deliberately avoids carrying forward old name-length limits or blanket fee promises.
Before leaving Chongqing, check that you can open the order without depending on a fragile connection. Keep your charging cable and an offline record of the train details. Share the complete station name with any driver. Our internet and connectivity guide can help with the phone setup, while a station service desk remains the fallback for a railway-specific problem.
If you miss a train, contact railway staff promptly with the existing order. Ask what change or refund options remain for that ticket, rather than buying a speculative replacement and hoping the original will be refunded. Establish the result of the old order and the status of any new one separately.

Bring the original booking passport. An itinerary printout is not a boarding document.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can I use a foreign passport on the English 12306 website? A: Yes, the public English registration form explicitly supports foreign passports. Complete the current identity checks and use the same passport record for your Chongqing rail booking.
Q: Does uploading a passport image mean I am verified? A: Check the actual 12306 verification status rather than assuming an upload receipt is approval. If the status remains unresolved, take the original passport to a railway ticket office for help.
Q: Can I board at Chongqing North with an itinerary printout? A: A 12306 itinerary printout is not a boarding document. Bring the original valid passport used for the booking and use the check-in channel directed by Chongqing North staff.
Q: Can I correct a newly purchased wrong ticket without a fee? A: An eligible official-channel misbooking may qualify within 30 minutes of payment and at least 4 hours before departure, subject to the 2026 policy’s exclusions and daily order limit. Check the particular 12306 order immediately.
Q: What if my train is correct but my Chongqing station is wrong? A: Check the issued order’s complete station name and contact 12306 or a railway ticket office about the available options. Chongqing North, West and East are distinct stations, so resolve the ticket and local-transfer plan together.
